Professional Bio
Born in Boston Massachusetts, Major Brooks Jr. is the oldest son of Major Sr. and Velmer Brooks! Major “ Eddie” Brooks Sr. was the lead singer for the Boston based popular R&B/ Doo Wopp group “ The Sophomores”. The Sophomores were awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006 by the Doo-Wopp Hall of Fame of America! While growing up in Cambridge Mass. young Major Jr. was exposed to many live performances of Doo-Wopp and R&B Entertainers. This exposure influenced his appreciation of true talent and musicianship! Both of his parents listened to a variety of artists and genres expanding Major’s knowledge, love and appreciation for Music! ( Especially Rhythmic Music) Mom Velmer influenced him with her favorite’s : The Coasters, The Flamingos, The Drifters, OC Smith, Aretha Franklin, Arthur Prysock, The Platters, James Brown, Esther Williams, Nancy Wilson, Dinah Washington and especially Nina Simon! While some of his Dad’s favorites were: The Temptations, The Supremes, Al Green, Wilson Pickett, Barbara Mason, Isaac Hayes, the Beatles and Jazz legends Mongo Santamaria, Jimmy Smith, Herbie Mann, Dave Brubeck, Ahmad Jamal, Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery and singer Andy Williams! Of course AM / FM radio exposed him to many more artists of various genres especially Jazz!
Major attended Rindge Tech High in Cambridge Massachusetts. There he played Freshman Baseball, Freshman Basketball, 4 years of Football and Snare Drum on the Schools Marching Band.
Major went on to attend Springfield College, Springfield Massachusetts. He graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Rehabilitation. It was at SC Major became a Radio DJ/Announcer, Producer, Music director, Program Director and General Manager for WSCB Springfield College Radio. It was at WSCB he and colleague Nancy Williams created the first “Jazz Expansions Show”. Major also had a short Run at WTCC in Springfield Ma, hosting the popular show “The Jazz Boat”.
From Springfield he returned to Boston joining the professional radio ranks with stops at WILD and WCAS. At WCAS he established the popular “ All That Jazz” show. In 2003 Major recreated the “Jazz Expansions” radio show ! “A Unique Mix of Jazz Styles and Artists from yesterday, today, and for the Future”! Jazz Expansions has aired consistently since 2003 and Major plans to air it well into the future! Now all you have to do is Kick Back, Sit Back, Relax and Enjoy this Unique Ride!
